The Atari ST is a 16-bit personal computer family by Atari, famous for its MIDI support and many games. Was fairly popular early in its life due to the lower cost however the Amiga quickly over took its popularity all down to lowering the price, bundles and Shadow of the Beast. Many early Amiga games were ST ports due to the same processor.

Ripping Tools

Maptapper

Maptapper is a Windows application used to rip graphics and maps from Amiga games. It can also read Atari ST games and has rudimentary support for Commodore 64 games as well. Both the official website and the built-in help file have a basic tutorial on how to rip sprites.

The WIP version that supports Steem savestates and palettes sadly was unreleased so recolouring is required. Reading from .st files is hit and miss.

Floppy Image

Floppy Image is a Windows application. This can extract raw .pic, .pc1 files from .st and scene .msa files, these can be viewed via RECOIL.

When running, an error message saying "Incompatible or missing fdrawcmd driver!" will pop up. Ignore it as it is only useful for transferring actual Atari ST floppies to a computer. Select Open Image File, select any .st or .msa file, then File Transfer. Select a file then click on Extract. Some games may have to click on a DIR to see more files or may not have any files at all.

Emulators

Steem SSE

Steem SSE is an Atari ST emulator that runs on Windows. It supports savestates and able to screenshot. The emulator requires a TOS image to work, most compatible is UK 1.02 however a few very early ST games may require 1.00. Default resolution is Low as the majority of games run on this resolution, a very few run on Medium.

Compared to extracted files, the default palette is incorrect similar to early Genesis emulators however is more correct when compared to some emulators where a washed out image is displayed. Changing the setting to vivid colours in Colour Control brings the palette close to the extracted files with a margin of error in values. Also regarding screenshots, change the setting to Minimum Size Screenshots matches the resolution.

An advantage compared to Floppy Image is that it can transfer files from copy protected .stx files. After opening Floppy A, drag a file towards Hard Drive to be saved onto your computer. Make sure that the GEMDOS hard drive option is selected for the option to appear.

Hatari

Compared to Steem SSE, Hatari is Linux focused but does have a Windows option.
